Public support for transformation? How to do it right?

In the IAA Conference panel "Transforming to new strengths - How business locations need to adapt to the transformation of the automotive industry" the head of North Rhine Westphalia‘s cluster automotiveland.nrw Stephan Vogelskamp discussed with Margot James (University of Warwick) former British Minister of State responsible for digitalization, with Clemens Baumgärtner (City of Munich), Sérgio Domingues (Georgia Department of Economic Development) and Doron Hemo (Consulate General Israel). How can regions help their industries transform. While Munich and the other regions support the industry, mainly from an administrative point of view, the reverse approach of the NRW Cluster received a lot of attention: First the supplier industry is contacting government organizations with clear ideas about the transformation, proposing projects, and eventually in the next step support measures and initiatives by the state  are taken together with the industry efficiently, in line with the needs, coordinated with other social stakeholders. 📢 In front of a broad IAA audience, the representatives outlined the new demands that the transformation of the automotive industry is placing on their locations, how cities and regions must respond to these new challenges in order to secure jobs and know-how, and what role the promotion of start-ups and new technologies plays in this. The roundtable found that regions in which no traditional automakers are located cannot rely on a powerful 🚢 driving force, but they can move much more directly to new, game-changing technologies and open up more quickly to new markets, thus gaining a head start on the 🚀 tough market competition.
